Protein powder- do I need it to lose weight?

The problem is that protein powders are so well marketed, and people don’t really know what they should buy, what’s going to help them lose weight, and what ‘magic’ ingredients they should include?


First point, protein powders should be used for topping up your needs, not as the bulk of your intake-not only are they pretty boring, but other protein sources, such as meat, fish, eggs and beans have other ingredients in them which have other things in them which are beneficial to you and your goals..


.. not to mention a huge benefit of these proteins is that they make you full and quickly, whilst powder, because there isn’t much bulk to it, doesn’t really do this.

They are however useful for cravings- they keep your blood sugar levels steadier , which means you’re not going to have those energy and mood crashes that have you reaching for the biscuit tin mid-morning!


With regards to what powders you should be buying as a female looking to lose fat, a basic whey protein will completely cover your needs- just make sure its over 20g protein and has 2g leucine in it ( this info will be available on the back, or on the sales page if online)- there is no need for diet wheys, green tea extracts, goji berry fusions etc.

If you are a vegan or lactose intolerant, vegan protein powders, such as rice, pea or a combination of rice,pea and hemp are great choices- I would recommend you get a decent protein powder if you are vegan or vegetarian as it can be hard to meet your protein needs.
